Curiosities and problems of weather measurements in the forest: a bird has chosen the rain gauge of the meteorological station at the biological and meteorological station Italia Costa Rica.
In detail it is a “pecho amarillo”, or “great kiskadee” (Pitangus sulphuratus). It is a passerine bird belonging to the Tyrannidae family, a large family of flycatchers from the New World. Widespread from the southern United States to South America, it is almost omnipresent in Costa Rica and, as can be seen, shows a fair degree of anthropophilia.
From a weather observation point of view, there has been no damage for now, we are in the middle of the dry season, it’s hot, yesterday 20 March 2021 the maximum temperature was 34.8 ° C, it hasn’t rained since January, except for a few occasional drops. It is also measuring the air quality sensor, with some tuning problems but with data indicating truly pure air, with only 4-5 ug / m3 of PM10 and 1-2 ug / m3 of PM2.5.
Of course, however, we could not let them build the nest there, it would invalidate the measures, so the instrumentation was cleaned up, without causing any damage to these colorful inhabitants of the Reserve.
